To put text into columns just follow the following sequence of actions:
1) Write the text. Leave a few blank lines at the end.
2) Select the text and only text (not select the blank lines.)
3) Select "Columns" menu of Word.
4) Indicate the number of columns, if desired separation line between columns, each column width, etc.
